In the Greater Seattle area, the day has been celebrated since 1889 with proclamations, speeches and a parade. The 17th of May Festival is sponsored by the Norwegian 17th of May Committee, an independent, nonprofit organization founded to commemorate Norwegian Constitution Day. The parade and activities are held in the Seattle neighborhood of Ballard with a turnout of over 15,000 people; and is known to be the biggest parade outside of Oslo. This year's Grand Marshall is Norway's top song vocalist Hanne Krough; and has appeared with many Scandinavian pop artists at the Oslo Pride 2007 Festival. (You Tube video under Hanne Krough/Johannes Brun). Further event details and itinerary information can be found at www.seattlesyttendemai.com
